Bethany Kludt is enrolled in the nursing program at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, some eighty miles northwest of Columbus.
She says that she would much rather spend time with her parents than with many of her peers, because so many of her fellow college students like to drink. “I like health and fitness too much for that,” she explains, “and that leaves me without things to do a lot on the weekends because most people my age like to drink.” She is right about that: about eighty percent of all college students drink to some degree, according to one national survey. People in that age group don’t drink as often as do older adults, but when they do, the survey says, they tend to drink more heavily. Alcohol is the most widely abused substance among young people.
And so Bethany Kludt tries to stay away from people who drink. “I don’t like alcohol and drugs of any kind, including smoking.” But she does like to have fun, she says. Living a healthy lifestyle in no way limits how much fun she has. She is a very active person who enjoys playing golf and riding her BMX bicycle, and for many years was into gymnastics. A more recent passion is taking part in bikini competitions, for which she lifts weights. She has competed in National Physique Committee events. “I have competed in two competitions thus far and am competing in at least two this year, too.”
Her family is perhaps the most important thing to Bethany Kludt. “My mom is my best friend, and I do everything with my parents.” She loves the gatherings at her grandmother’s home in Kentucky when her extended family spends time together. Above all, she wants to pass her classes at ONU with minimal stress, and become the best nurse that she can be.
