Bethany Kludt, a nursing student at Ohio Northern University, has been actively involved in sports for most of her life. At the age of three she began doing gymnastics, a sport she did through middle school. She also began riding bikes at age 3 and racing in BMX competitions when she was 4 years old. When she was in high school, she picked up golf and diving and after the first year in each was awarded Most Improved in each sport. As is evident, maintaining good physical health is one of her top priorities. She is also a big proponent of sports, as she believes playing sports can cultivate many positive qualities within a child.
One of these qualities is learning how to cooperate with other people to reach a common goal. There are several components of cooperation that an athlete begins to understand through experiences, such as communication and humility. Communicating effectively as a teammate involves the understanding how your teammates respond in the best possible manner. People respond in different ways; as an athlete you are trying to get your teammates to exude the maximum possible effort towards winning.
Humility is another big part of a successful team, says Bethany Kludt. Teammates must be committed to the common goal of the team, as opposed to their own selfish interests. When all teammates are committed to winning, then trust emerges; when trust is present, a team can truly succeed because everybody is willing to go out on a limb. Bethany Kludt is happy that she has had the opportunity to play so many sports growing up. She was on many BMX teams including One Bicycles, Racegirl, BMX Mania Factory Team, K&G Factory Racing Team, and Team Diamond. She believes that the qualities she has learned through sports have helped her in many other areas of her life, including school. She was always excited to see her teammates succeed. She is currently studying to become a nurse, a position that she believes she can help her family and community in.
